The Dura Ace FC-R9100 crankset by Shimano – cult look and performance

The Shimano Dura Ace FC-R9100 11-speed crankset has the same 4-arm design with a uniform 110 mm bolt circle diameter as its predecessor, but it has once again lost weight. The hollow forged Hollowtech crankarm now weighs seven grams less, which increases performance once again. The hollow large chainring also benefits from the weight saving. Since the Dura Ace also keeps up with the times, the FC-R9100 can easily be used on racing bikes with disc brakes. What has remained, of course, is the unique Dura Ace aesthetics, which are certainly cult, as well as the Hollowtech II construction for the best stability values. The crankarms are still made of aluminium, carbon is also used for the chainrings. There are five different 2x gradations and six arm lengths available, so that every rider will find his suitable set-up according to Shimano’s ” Rider Tuned” philosophy.

A lightweight crankset not only reduces the bike’s weight, but decreases rotating mass to aid in acceleration. The challenge is to reduce the weight of the crank without reducing its strength and rigidity. Shimano’s advanced forging technology has solved the problem through the Hollowtech crank. Just like high quality frame tubing, a hollow crank arm can provide amazing strength and rigidity at very light weight.

Hollowtech II
The concept of the Hollowtech II technology was focused on the production of an optimised crankset that minimises the rider’s effort for the ride. The high rigidity of the crankset ensures efficient power transmission when pedalling, while its low weight relieves the rider, especially over longer distances. The crankset was developed wanted to achieving an optimum ratio between stiffness, rotational efficiency, low weight and attractive appearance. Hollowtech technology enables extremely lightweight, hollow crankarms, manufactured using Shimano’s exclusive forging technology, to achieve maximum stiffness. In addition, with the Hollowtech II crankset the right crank is firmly connected to the axle of the bottom bracket, achieving an optimum balance between maximum stiffness and minimum weight. The externally mounted bottom bracket offers better weight distribution and stability for more efficient power transmission.

Hollow outer chainring: The extremely stiff hollow structure reduces the weight while maintaining the same strength. Better power transmission and faster, more precise front shifts.
